Lord Shiva is known as the destroyer among the Holy Trinity(Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva) of Hinduism. Lord Shiva is known to be easily angered and even more easily appeased. Lord Shiva is said to have three eyes, of which, the third eye is opened to completely annihilate anything in its presence. Lord Shivas weapon of choice is the holy trident, known as the trishul. Lord Shiva is described as the absolute/ultimate yogi, i.e , one who has full control over all senses and elements.
Lord Shiva has his body wrapped in an attire made of tigers skin. Lord Shivas body has poisonous snakes as ornaments. Lord Shivas form is said to be beyond the descriptive capability of even other gods, hence Lord Shiva is worshipped in the symbolic form of a shivalinga. Lord Shivas consort is Devi Parvathi. Together, they are known as the universal couple. Lord Shivas family consists of Lord Ganesha, Lord Kartikeya/Murugan and Lord Ayyapa as sons.
Lord Shiva is mentioned as mrityunjaya or the one who has victory over death. Lord Shiva has been known to be worshipped even before the advent of temples.
